One of the greatest ways we can make an impact in regards to owning a pet is how you get said pet. Adopt Don’t Shop is more that just a catching saying. It is the easiest way to save an animals life. They say when you adopt you don’t just save the animal you got that day but the life of another that the rescue group or center can save now because they have extra space.
Adopt Don’t Shop- How Jemma rescued me
When I first decided I wanted a dog of my own as an adult the first place I even looked was the humane society. We had several dogs growing up and none were from a pet shop. I did want a puppy as most pet owners do when getting a new a pet. The humane society of Sarasota county had so many puppies it was hard to choose. I saw Jemma on their website (previously named Susie-Q) and had to go see her in person.
She looked so pitiful and sad in the cage at the humane society. She was begging to get out and barking and you could just tell how sad she was. I played with her and due to humane society adoption guidelines (which are a great thing), I had to bring back back my roommate at the times dog to meet her before adopting. We came back the next day and the pups got along great and I adopted the former Susie Q.
After adopting Jemma, I became very passionate about sharing the message behind Adopt Don’t Shop. Many people don’t realize how important adopting is. The shelters and centers are always full. These dogs need homes even more than pet shop or breeder animals. They often have been neglected or abused and need a warm open heart to help heal them.
Jemma has been an incredible dog. Jemma is smart, she is not well-mannered because she is easily excitable but we love this about her! She doesn’t like many other dogs, she is loyal, and she is protective but all of that makes Jemma is one of a kind! We love her just the way she is and truthfully she rescued me. Jemma has been with me at some of my darkest times and happiest moments. Watching her grow and mature has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. She is my best friend and I love my time with her.
